The Earth’s climate has been experiencing changes with an increase in temperature over the last century in a phenomenon known as global warming. There are many causes for global warming. The main cause for the global warming trend results from the greenhouse effect. This is a man-made cause where the atmosphere traps the heat gases from Earth towards space.
As greenhouse gas emissions increase, they build up in the atmosphere and warm the climate, leading to many other changes on a global scale—in the atmosphere, in the oceans and on land. These changes have huge impacts on people, society, and the environment. Since many of the major greenhouse gases can stay in the atmosphere for tens to hundreds of years after being emitted, their warming effects on the climate persist over a long time and can therefore affect both present and future generations. |
